the curly-haired man
who just hailed me. His face,
a wedge, ends with a tuft
of hair on his chin. Lively
eyes smile from behind wire-
rimmed glasses. African,
obviously, East African—
Ethiopian or Somali.
He introduces himself;
he’s Somali. When he
passed me he thought
he saw something,
a friendly face, a fellow
African, thought I was Sudanese.
He has recently earned his Ph.D.
in anthropology, the study of people.
I bid him safe travels
and turn, going to my family.
